# Karma Beats Credit Scores

Credit scores are one of the stranger artefacts of modern finance. A single number between 0 and 1200 (or 300 and 850 depending on your country) that determines whether you can borrow money, rent an apartment, sometimes get a job, and in some cases what interest rate you pay on insurance. It follows you everywhere. It's hard to build, easy to damage, and often a poor reflection of who you actually are financially.

The deeper problem isn't the number. It's what the number measures.

A credit score measures your relationship with debt. Did you borrow money and pay it back on time? Have you been in financial trouble before? How much credit do you have available and how much are you using? That's basically it. If you've never had debt - if you've lived within your means, paid cash, avoided credit cards - you might have a low score not because you're risky but because you're invisible to the system. It has no data on you, so it assigns you a negative prior.

That's a reasonably useful metric for predicting whether you'll repay a specific loan. It's a terrible metric for assessing whether you're a trustworthy person, a reliable counterparty, a good tenant, or a worthy candidate for anything beyond a loan.

The idea behind karma as a metric - in the computing sense, not the metaphysical one - is to measure something broader and more meaningful: actual demonstrated behaviour across multiple dimensions over time.

Did you do what you said you'd do? When you made a commitment, did you follow through? Were the people you worked with better or worse off for the interaction? Did you contribute something of value to your community? Did you show up consistently?

These are the things that actually predict whether someone's a good counterparty, a reliable employee, a trustworthy tenant, a useful collaborator. And for most of human history, in the small communities where most people lived, these were exactly the things that determined your standing. Reputation was everything because everyone knew everyone.

The problem with scale is that reputation broke. Once communities got large enough, you couldn't personally know everyone you were dealing with. You needed proxies. Credit scores, CVs, credentials, references - all of these are attempts to reconstruct, at scale, the reputation information that used to be available through direct community knowledge.

They're imperfect proxies. What we can now build, with the technical infrastructure that didn't exist twenty years ago, is something closer to the original: actual verified reputation based on actual observed behaviour over time.

The technical requirements for this are clearer than they used to be.

You need verified identity - one real person, one record, not gameable by creating new accounts when your history becomes inconvenient. This is the hardest part and it requires biometric verification or something equivalent. No other solution to the fake-account problem actually works at scale.

You need immutability - the record can't be quietly edited by whoever controls the database. If your karma record is held by a platform, the platform can change it, delete it, or take it away from you when you leave. It needs to exist on infrastructure that isn't controlled by any single party.

You need multi-dimensional input - not just one type of activity but a genuine cross-section of how you actually operate. Knowledge contributions, commitments made and kept, peer assessments, consistency over time. The more dimensions, the harder to game and the more meaningful the signal.

You need time-weighting - recent behaviour matters more than old behaviour. People change. A system that permanently punishes you for something that happened ten years ago and doesn't reflect your current behaviour isn't measuring reputation, it's hoarding grudges.

And you need portability - your karma belongs to you, not to the platform where you earned it. It should be usable anywhere the system is recognised, the same way a credit score follows you between banks.

The applications are broader than they first appear.

Lending is the obvious one - a karma score that measures actual financial behaviour and life reliability would be more predictive than a credit score and more equitable, particularly for people who haven't historically had access to formal credit.

Employment is a bigger one. Hiring is terrible at assessing actual future performance. Credentials and interview performance are weak predictors. A verified track record of how someone has actually performed, attested to by the people who worked with them, in an immutable record - that's more useful than most of what goes into a hiring decision currently.

The sharing economy already uses reputation systems but they're platform-specific and shallow. Your Airbnb rating doesn't help you on a different platform. Your Uber rating disappears if Uber changes its algorithm. A portable, verified, multi-dimensional reputation that you own would let the trust you've built in one context carry over to others.

And governance - who gets a vote on what, who can be trusted with what level of access, who should serve in what kind of role. Democratic systems apply one-person-one-vote as a blunt instrument. Reputation-weighted governance, done fairly, recognises that demonstrated expertise and consistent contribution should carry more weight on specific decisions. Not plutocracy - that's weighting by wealth. Merit-weighted governance, where the weighting is based on verified demonstrated behaviour in relevant domains.

I'm not saying karma replaces credit scores tomorrow. The adoption question is enormous, and there are real risks around gaming any reputation system that gets widely used. Several blockchain-based reputation projects have tried versions of this and failed - mostly on adoption rather than technology. The lesson from those failures is that incentive design matters as much as architecture: a karma system only works if the scoring components are genuinely hard to fake, the weighting reflects real behavioural value, and the economic reward for honest participation is clearly better than the reward for gaming it. Those are solvable design problems, not fundamental objections to the concept.

But credit scores were also an imperfect, opaque, widely-criticised system when they were first adopted. They spread because they were useful enough, and because the alternative - no standardised creditworthiness signal at all - was worse.

The same calculus applies to karma-based reputation. It doesn't have to be perfect. It has to be better than the proxies we're currently using, and available to people who those proxies currently fail.

There are a lot of those people.
